A preoccupation with safety has stripped childhood of independence, risk taking, and discovery—without making it safer. A new kind of playground points to a better solution. A trio of boys tramps along the length of a wooden fence, back and forth, shouting like carnival barkers. It opens in half an hour. He tries to figure out what half an hour is and whether he can wait that long. The Land is a playground that takes up nearly an acre at the far end of a quiet housing development in North Wales. The ground is muddy in spots and, at one end, slopes down steeply to a creek where a big, faded plastic boat that most people would have thrown away is wedged into the bank. The center of the playground is dominated by a high pile of tires that is growing ever smaller as a redheaded girl and her friend roll them down the hill and into the creek. Three boys lounge in the only unbroken chairs around it; they are the oldest ones here, so no one complains. One of them turns on the radio—Shaggy is playing Honey came in and she caught me red-handed, creeping with the girl next door —as the others feel in their pockets to make sure the candy bars and soda cans are still there.

The many aspirants looking to write their way into the ever more celebrated and lucrative movie business could turn to a newly published manual called Ten Million Photoplay Plots by Wycliff Aber Hill. In this book he provides a “taxonomy of possible types of dramatic ‘situations,’ first running them down in outline form, then describing each more completely and offering possible variations.

Hill’s 37 basic dramatic situations include such “happy situations” as “rescue,” “loved ones lost and recovered,” and “a miracle of God”; such “pathetic situations” as “love’s obstacles,” “rivalry between unequals,” and “a mystery”; and such “disastrous situations precipitated without criminal intent” as “possessed of an ambition,” “enmity between kinsmen,” and “vengeance.

Criticism of Facebook has led to international media coverage and significant reporting of its legal troubles and the outsize influence it has on the lives and health of its users and employees, as well on its influence on the way media, specifically news, is reported and distributed. Notable issues include Internet privacy , such as use of a widespread “like” button on third-party websites tracking users , [1] [2] possible indefinite records of user information, [3] automatic facial recognition software, [4] [5] and its role in the workplace, including employer-employee account disclosure.

Facebook’s operations have also received coverage. The company’s electricity usage, [14] tax avoidance , [15] real-name user requirement policies, [16] censorship policies , [17] [18] handling of user data , [19] and its involvement in the United States PRISM surveillance program have been highlighted by the media and by critics. The company and its employees have also been subject to litigation cases over the years, [33] [34] [35] [36] with its most prominent case concerning allegations that CEO Mark Zuckerberg broke an oral contract with Cameron Winklevoss , Tyler Winklevoss , and Divya Narendra to build the then-named “HarvardConnection” social network in , instead allegedly opting to steal the idea and code to launch Facebook months before HarvardConnection began.

Facebook has been banned by several governments for various reasons, including Syria, [43] China, [44] and Iran. On August 13, , it was revealed that the company had enlisted contractors to create and obtain transcripts of users. In , the Electronic Frontier Foundation identified two personal information aggregation techniques called “connections” and “instant personalization”. They demonstrated that anyone could get access to information saved to a Facebook profile, even if the information was not intended to be made public.

Facebook treats such relationships as public information, and the user’s identity may be displayed on the Facebook page of the product or service. Instant Personalization was a pilot program which shared Facebook account information with affiliated sites, such as sharing a user’s list of “liked” bands with a music website, so that when the user visits the site, their preferred music plays automatically. As soon as you visit the sites in the pilot program Yelp, Pandora, and Microsoft Docs the sites can access your name, your picture, your gender, your current location, your list of friends, all the Pages you have Liked—everything Facebook classifies as public information.

Even if you opt out of Instant Personalization, there’s still data leakage if your friends use Instant Personalization websites—their activities can give away information about you, unless you block those applications individually.

Much of the press had dismissed it as a pale retread of the groundbreaking Ricky Gervais-led U. But over the next two seasons, the series, starring Steve Carell as the manager of a Scranton, Pennsylvania, paper company called Dunder Mifflin, gradually found its footing. On April 10th, , The Office topped itself with its best half-hour ever — and perhaps the best comedy episode of the decade.

The previous season had seen Jim and Pam finally get together after years of flirtation; Michael had also found love — with Jan Levinson, his former boss. The result was a master class of dark comedy that few other shows would dare attempt, as well as 22 of the most brilliantly cringe-inducing minutes in TV history. To celebrate its 10th anniversary, we tracked much of the cast and crew for an oral history of the landmark episode.

Premiering on HBO on Valentine’s Day , When Strangers Click was an attempt with amusing factoids about online matchmaking and dating. he’s attracted to, a subject that isn’t dealt with too often in documentaries.

The craziest story comes at the end, in which a failed, middle-aged Swedish businessman who lives on a secluded island with his mom becomes a rock star on the Second Life website. The extras include a bonus story about a so-called “Cyber Cyrano,” a hired gun to do the online-dating dirty work for you. Like the rest of the documentary, it’s a passably interesting bit, if not exactly deep. This isn’t up to HBO’s usual standards, and yet its compact running time all but ensures it won’t bore, either.

There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for. Take a zombie apocalypse for example. The word zombie comes from Haitian and New Orleans voodoo origins. Although its meaning has changed slightly over the years, it refers to a human corpse mysteriously reanimated to serve the undead. Through ancient voodoo and folk-lore traditions, shows like the Walking Dead were born.

In movies, shows, and literature, zombies are often depicted as being created by an infectious virus, which is passed on via bites and contact with bodily fluids.

Network television is, of course, as averse to physical imperfection in women as a high-rolling bond trader scouring happy hour. From what I can tell after a single episode this is a comedy about an average guy who dumps his perfectly attractive girlfriend for a hotter one in a tighter dress. The guy, Ben Jason Biggs , meets his upgrade, Kate Sarah Chalke , on top of the Empire State Building and then pursues her without first going through the tried-and-true protocol of breaking up with the incumbent.

This would be entirely inoffensive if Ben were meant to be remotely rakish. But instead he is portrayed as a soulful searcher of low-grade mind meld. Apparently the kind of companion Ben really wants is an year-old boy with breast implants. Online or off, a ferocious will and a forced optimism are required to remain in the game. One of the women showcased here tells of having been stood up outside a church for one Internet date, but she perseveres. Her wish is simply to meet a man who lives in the New York metropolitan region.
